Joe Bower asked if showing teachers how to make self-graded quizzes for students using Google Docs had any value. Specifically, he said: When technology is used to accelerate the worst forms of pedagogy, we should all cringe, turn and run away. And those who endorse this crap should be ashamed of t

We are nearing the end of the school year and as the conditions outside improve and students become more active with outdoor activities, I thought it would be a good time to give students and parents a brief reminder on how to appropriately care for the MacBook. The laptops get many uses through out the day and it is essential that both the appearance and the way that they function are cared for. The MacBooks are constructed well, but will not take abuse, so keep the following reminders in mind to assure proper maintenance of the computers.
Make sure that you transport your laptop in the case that is assigned to you, this case has a hard shell that will protect your computer from mild drops and minor incidents. Never “swap” or “share” your computer with another student, you are responsible for the computer you are assigned even if someone else is using it.Keep open liquid containers away from the computer. Spilling liquids on your computer is one of the most destructive incidents that can happen to your computer and many times requires replacing many parts or even worse it causes irreversible damage that cannot be repaired.Do not leave your MacBook in your vehicle as extreme hot and cold will harm the computer. If your computer gets cold, let it warm-up before you start it up. Do not leave your MacBook in an area where it can be taken or “accidently” damaged. Every minute of the day you are responsible for the computer, so please choose a safe location to store your computer when it is not in use.Periodically restart your computer. Many times the longer you go without restarting your computer the more issues will arise, if you happen to have an issue with your computer running smoothly restart your computer first and see if that resolves your issue. Be sure to recharge your battery on a nightly basis, the battery will last longer if it is charged regularly. The more that you run your computer on a depleted battery the faster it will shorten the battery life. The fewer applications that you have running on your computer at one time the more it will prolong your battery life and the better the computer will run. If you experience an issue with your computer locking up, it is likely caused by a program error. Close all your programs and restart your computer. If you are unable to close your programs you can press the space+tab key to see what programs you have open and then press the space+Q keys to quit selected programs. If this fails you can force quit a program under the apple icon in the top left of your screen. At the end of the school year all student computers will be handed in for summer maintenance. All student computers will be re-imaged and all files that you have saved on the computer will be deleted.
Progress is being made on the Keokuk County Career Academy and as you can see in the photos, workers are currently hanging and taping drywall. All the conduit has been installed along with the plumbing and windows will be installed next week. The heating/cooling units are hanging from the ceilings and will be hooked into the geothermal system at a later date. This will be a state of the art facility that will house many different types of opportunities for our students, including a virtual reality welder to enhance the welding program. A business incubator will also be included with nearly 20 business incubator stations that will provide space for students to run a business while taking entrepreneurial coursework.
We are fortunate in Sigourney and in Keokuk County to provide our students with alternative programing for Juniors and Seniors. Keokuk County which includes four rural school districts, provides students the opportunity to choose careers and receive quality programing through Indian Hills Community College. Students have a variety of careers that include welding, machining, nursing, information technology, Project Lead the Way, and entrepreneurship. Classes are currently housed in the Sigourney High School, but a great looking facility is currently being built and will be completed sometime in February. Here are some photos taken on 1-6-10. Enjoy.
